Many of our patients are conscious of what they put into their bodies and how it can affect their overall health. The same can be said for toothpaste. While we don’t particularly believe that using regular toothpaste from your local food or drug store is harmful to your oral health (in fact, it’s pretty great), some of our patients want an alternative that is environment-friendly and chemical-free.
There are many homemade toothpaste recipes out there – and some even use hydrogen peroxide, which we never recommend! Our favorite recipe involves just four basic ingredients, all of which are natural and easy to find at a grocery store.
- 2/3 Cup Baking Soda
- 1 tbsp Extra Virgin Coconut Oil
- 2 tsps Essential Oil
- 1 tsp Finely Ground Sea Salt
Just mix all of the above ingredients together, add distilled water as needed, and store in an airtight container (preferably a glass jar). You can choose whatever essential oil you’d like – maybe rotate different ones until you find your favorite, or combine some. Personally, we think lavender-peppermint is amazing. When using your toothpaste, make sure you don’t dip your toothbrush into the jar, but rather scoop some on with your finger or a popsicle stick.
