With the holidays just around the corner, you may be wondering how to thank your dentist for keeping you and your family’s teeth healthy and in tip-top shape. What better way to show your appreciation than by making your own do-it-yourself dental-themed Christmas ornament? This is an activity you can do with the whole family which will also serve as a reminder to everyone on how important it is to regularly see your dentist for check-ups! As you know, Carolina Smiles Family Dentistry is dedicated to serving the whole family, and our children’s dentistry services are known for keeping your kids happy and comfortable. Get your family together and try some of these DIY Christmas ornaments but also try to come up with some creative ones on your own.
Recycled Toothbrush Ornaments
If you have any old toothbrushes that are on their way out, why not make a fun Christmas ornament out of them? Maybe you remember the toothbrush bracelets that the cool kids used to make back in the day; this is the same concept but you can make other shapes too. With two old toothbrushes you can shape each toothbrush to make a heart! To repurpose a toothbrush into a Christmas ornament, all you need are a few plastic toothbrushes, a pair of pliers, and a pot for boiling water. You may remove the bristles with the pliers before boiling or keep them on.
Boil a pot of water and place the toothbrushes in and boil them for 10 to 15 minutes. Then, remove the toothbrushes one at a time and check to see if they are pliable. If they are heated through, they should bend easily. Take a heated toothbrush and bend with pliers (or very carefully with your hands!) to wrap them into shapes such as bangles or hearts. Since the plastic will be very hot, children should just observe this rather than touching the hot plastic. Kids can participate by decorating the ornaments after they’ve cooled down by painting them or putting glitter on them!
Tooth Garland Made with Dental Floss
What better way to remind your family of the importance of flossing than by creating your own garland held together by dental floss? Simply use construction paper or another heavy paper and cut out lots of pieces of paper that are shaped like a tooth. You can vary the size of the tooth or keep them identical.
Decorate the teeth after you are finished cutting them out with glitter or draw a smiley face on each individual tooth to show a clean and happy mouth. After you have all of your teeth cut-outs, use the dental floss to tie them all together by punching a small hole at the edge of each tooth and lacing the dental floss through. At this step, if you have children who are participating, you can remind them of how important it is to floss their teeth daily!
Tooth Ornament Made with Felt
Make a single tooth ornament by cutting out the shape of a tooth with felt and then sew the two halves together, but be sure to stuff the top opening with some stuffing before you sew the tooth together. You can then decorate each side of the tooth with a smiling face. If you have black felt, cut out a smile and glue it onto the tooth and then draw on a pair of eyes or even use old buttons for the eyes. Use your creativity here and decorate your felt tooth in a fun and different way! Then use dental floss to hang the tooth on a tree.
At Carolina Smiles Family Dentistry, we care about the oral health of your whole family. These DIY Christmas ornaments are a great way to involve your family in a fun activity related to your dental health!
