It happens to everyone sooner or later – you forget your dental appointment. Other things get in the way, or the appointment is simply ‘misplaced’ in the hectic shuffle of daily life. Forgetting a dental appointment is nothing to be ashamed of.
Fortunately, there are few simple tricks you can use to make sure you remember your next appointment:
Technology is your friend.
Set an alarm on your cellphone, iPad or other tablet. In addition, both Microsoft Windows and MacOS have built-in calendaring software that can remind you of upcoming appointments. Other options include free online reminder services such as Memo to Me, which will automatically send you e-mail reminders about upcoming appointments.
Write it down.
Make sure you write down any upcoming appointments, and keep the written reminder in a prominent place where you see it often. A dry-erase board is a great tool to help you keep a list of upcoming appointments – and is harder to misplace then a pen-and-paper note.
Fit your schedule: Schedule your appointment so that it naturally fits into your schedule. For instance, if you are regularly off on Tuesday afternoons, schedule your appointment for a Tuesday and not during a time you may have work or other activities normally scheduled.
Link to other events.
If your children return to school on the second week of August every year, set family dental appointments for the first week of August. Linking the two events together – so, for instance, you go every year on the week before school starts – will help reinforce your memory of the appointment.
Back to the basics.
A shared family calendar displayed in a common area – such as on the front of the refrigerator – is a tried-and-true way to make sure everyone is where they need to be when they need to be there. Write all appointments on the calendar as soon as they are made, and make sure and check the calendar every morning before leaving home for the day.
