Top Five Foods and Drinks that Dentists Avoid!

Your dentist is not only an expert advisor to your unique dental needs, but also a great example of maintaining proper oral health. Many foods we eat on a day-to-day basis can cause demineralization of the teeth, unsightly tooth damage, and staining. These are all issues dentists work hard to eradicate for both themselves and their patients.

Wondering what your dentist had for lunch today? Well, it was probably not on the list below!

Here are the five foods and drinks that dentists avoid:

  1. 1. Pickles – The sweet and acidic combination can have damaging effects on teeth. Eating them often can lead to enamel erosion.

  2. 2. Red wine – Relaxing with a glass of wine after a long day sounds perfect, but watch out for stains on your teeth! The acids in both red and white wines can eat through the surface of teeth over time. As always, drink in moderation.

  3. 3. Soda – Sugars, acids, and heavy carbonation are a recipe for disaster for your teeth. Drinking the “liquid candy,” even on occasion, will lead to tooth erosion and decay.

  4. 4. Dried fruit – Disguised as a healthy treat, dried fruits are actually not very tooth-friendly. Their sticky nature enables them to get stuck in between the teeth. Some dried fruits are also more sugary than candy!

  5. 5. Coffee –Limit coffee intake to 1-2 cups per day. When consumed excessively, the tannic acid wears down enamel and will stain the teeth.

The next time you visit your dentist you can bet that these foods and drinks were either not on their list that day or consumed only in moderation.
