Life Hacks: What to Do if You Forgot Your Toothbrush

It happens to everyone sooner or later. You’ve finally gotten a chance to take that vacation or family trip only to realize once you’ve arrived at your destination that you forgot to pack a toothbrush. Unfortunately, good dental hygiene never takes a vacation. What can you do keep your pearly whites clean without a toothbrush?

Here are three easy life hacks you can use to make up for your missing toothbrush:

Remembered the toothpaste, but forgot the toothbrush:

Did you remember to pack toothpaste but left your toothbrush at home? Wrap a paper towel around your index finger. Moisten it slightly and apply toothpaste to it. Brush your teeth with it just as you would a toothbrush, working from the gums to the crowns of your teeth.

Forgot the toothbrush and the toothpaste:

Wash your hands, but don’t dry them. Beginning at the gum line, wipe each tooth down from gum to crown with your index finger, rinsing your hands between each tooth to prevent spreading plaque. Alternately, you can use a paper towel. Simply wrap a paper towel around your index finger – thicker paper towels work best – then dampen it. Next, wipe each tooth, gum to crown, with the paper towel-wrapped finger. Finally, thoroughly rinse your mouth out with water to remove any loose plaque or food particles that may still be lingering.

Get salty for dental health:

If you have access to salt, a saltwater rinse is also a great follow-up to either brushing method that will leave your mouth feeling refreshed. Saltwater is also a natural antibacterial agent that can help fight the bacterial in your mouth that contributes to bad breath and cavities. Simply mix one or two teaspoons of table salt with warm water and rinse with it.
