Worst Foods for Dental Health

Refined Sugar

If you regularly go for the sweets, it’s time to reevaluate what you’re reaching for. Candy, sodas, and other refined sugary snacks cause some of the worst tooth decay that dentists ever see. Yes, we can tell the difference between the “refined sugar” decay and other causes of decay, because it’s that bad.

Avoid candy and soda. Instead, go for fruit, sugarless gum, or a naturally flavored water.

Acids

Pickle, anyone? If you’re addicted to any type of vinegary foods, beware. Pickles, soda, and citrus fruits all contribute to eroding the enamel of your teeth, which allows decay to seep in at a much faster rate.

If you can’t stay away from the olives and oranges, be sure to drink a lot of water after eating these foods (and during). It’ll help wash the acid from your teeth and keep it from eroding them.

Tannins

Whether it’s your afternoon cup of tea or your evening glass of wine, tannins are guilty for staining your teeth, and fast, too! Notable for its bitter taste and dark appearance, this biomolecule can also be found in some fruit juices, berries, spices, and chocolate.

Next time you go for a tannin-ful food, do a quick brush afterwards to get the plaque off and help prevent your teeth from staining.

Schedule a dental exam to see how your teeth are doing against these unhealthy foods!
